Holiday Merchandising Tip #24: Tis the season to be jolly

There are two different ways for retailers to look at the holiday season with all its inherent challenges and stresses to both customers and sales staff: 

  1. either feed off the anxiety of stressed customers,
  2. or be sure your customers feed off your desire to provide them with a jolly and stress-free shopping experience.

Encouraging your customers to feed off your enthusiasm is the far more enjoyable option!

As the store owner or manager, it is up to you to set the mood.  Be playful, take care of your staff, enjoy the holiday season and be sure to infuse your staff and customers with this perspective even when breaks are hard to come by and customers may not be at their best. 

If YOU arrive at work full of energy and enthusiasm, your staff will be infected.  Maybe you can supply coffee for your openers, or take your closers out for a drink.  Maybe all you can do is offer an additional percentage off on employee purchases.  Whatever you can do, do it.  Don’t forget the people who make it all possible.  Don’t forget to have fun!
